Major Milestone reached

For a decade, IRIS (Identification and Referral to Improve Safety) has been transforming the way primary care responds to domestic abuse. As a specialist programme embedded within GP practices, IRIS equips clinicians and practice teams with the knowledge, confidence, and pathways needed to identify patients experiencing domestic abuse and connect them directly with expert, independent support.

Funded by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Safer Merthyr Tydfil and RCT Domestic Abuse Services have been proud to deliver this vital support across the region.

Over the last ten years, IRIS has strengthened healthcare responses, widened access to life-changing specialist services, and ensured that survivors are recognised, believed, and supported safely. More than 2,000 patients have been referred through IRIS—each one a testament to the programme’s impact.

Patients consistently tell us they feel safer, more empowered, and more hopeful about their futures, with many reporting improved health and wellbeing as a result of the support they received.
